Chapter 18

Iwasn’t ready to go back home yet, not after such a close call with Lionel. My heart was still pounding as I mentally retraced my steps. When had I last seen the recorder?

“Do you want to take a little walk?” I asked Archie.

Archie tried to lick my face, but I ducked out of the way, fending his slobbery mouth away with the sleeve of my jacket. The light where we were sitting turned green, and I found myself turning left.

The only thing I knew this way was Jason’s house… the house he had inherited. As I continued down the road, I had to make a conscious decision. Either I was going to keep taking the turns that would lead me to Jason’s inherited house or I was going to turn right at the stop sign up ahead and loop back to Mayhem.

My feet and hands decided that we were heading toward Jason’s inherited house. Once I passed the turnoff back to Mayhem, I felt my heartbeat speeding up.

My phone rang, and I jumped. My head hit the headrest, and I laughed at myself for being such a scaredy cat.

Bruce’s name was on the caller ID, and I answered right away.

“I hope you’re headed back here. I can’t wait to see what you caught with the recorder.”

I stared straight ahead and didn’t answer right away.

“Jane, is everything okay?”

“I’m driving,” I responded. That was completely true. However, it was to avoid the fact that I didn’t have a recording of my interview with Lionel. My mouth felt suddenly dry, and I checked the cupholders to see if I had a water bottle with me.

“So, you’re on your way here?”

“No, I’m… going to take Archie for a little walk first. I want to think things through a little bit, and Archie needs the exercise.”

Bruce sighed. “Fine, I’ll wait. Call me when you’re on your way.”

I was surprised that he hadn’t asked more questions. Bruce always wanted to know exactly what I was doing.

“Well, Archie, this is our chance to come up with an explanation about what happened to the recorder. Can I blame it on you?”

Archie’s tongue lolled out of his mouth, clearly not liking the idea. “Fine, I won’t, but you need to back me up. Tell Bruce how long I spent looking for it and that I risked… what are you doing?”

Archie had started digging his nose between the center console and my seat. He jostled my elbow. “Stop that. I’m trying to drive here.”

Archie dove his head back down between the console and the seat, and I heard him snort loudly.

“Did you find a french fry or something?” I asked him.

Archie didn’t answer me, not that I was expecting him to.

He continued digging as I turned right and slowed down. We were on a lonelier road that didn’t have nearly as many cars passing.

I pulled to the side of the road and slapped at the button for my hazard lights. I tried pushing Archie back from the space between my seat and the center console, but he wouldn’t go for it.
